On Sunday, people in Kerala celebrated Onam by gathering in their homes and engaging in various activities like exchanging gifts, playing games, wearing new clothes, setting off fireworks, and enjoying a traditional feast. The festive spirit extended beyond homes, with clubs and associations organizing swings, traditional games, and competitions. People also visited temples and participated in cultural events like dance performances. The celebrations reflected a nostalgic view of Kerala’s pastoral past and included creating vibrant flower carpets, known as Pookkalams. The festival is largely secular and celebrates the return of King Mahabali to earth to visit his subjects.
