A recent study by the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K) suggests planting tropical fruit trees and exotic fruits alongside existing crops in Kerala to diversify and modernize the state’s plantations. The report recommends promoting a public-private partnership model to establish a Kerala brand for plantation crops and promoting silviculture and agroforestry. The study also suggests reducing regulatory controls, implementing ease of doing business in the plantation sector, and introducing a single-window clearance system. Eco-tourism should be promoted while maintaining the unique characteristics of the plantation sector. The study will be reviewed with stakeholders before further action is taken.
