Houseboat Owners: Houseboat Owners Asked To Pay 18% Gst From 2017 | Thiruvananthapuram News

Houseboat owners in Thiruvananthapuram are facing a dilemma as the state GST department is now demanding 18% GST to be paid retrospectively from 2017, even though they have been paying at 5% all these years. The state government claims there has been misclassification of taxable income. The sudden change has put a financial burden on boat owners, with each facing a demand of Rs 1-7 crore. The move has been criticized by tourism industry representatives who argue that houseboats should be classified under tour operation services with 5% GST. Boat owners are concerned that the additional tax will severely impact their business.
