The government of Kerala has approved the conversion of 2.40 acres of paddy land in Ramanattukara, Kozhikode, to build a stadium, despite warnings from an expert committee about the environmental consequences. This decision goes against the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act, 2008, which aims to protect paddy land and wetlands from unregulated development. The project, which had been on hold since 2018, was revived last year and approved by the agriculture department and the cabinet. Experts warn that filling the paddy land will damage the region’s ecosystem, affecting water retention and drinking water availability. This decision also contradicts the government’s policies on agriculture and could worsen flood crises in the future.
