Demand for more MEMU trains, mainly in Kollam-Alappuzha-Ernakulam corridor

Commuters on the Kollam-Ernakulam train route are facing overcrowding issues, leading to demands for an additional MEMU train in the corridor. The heavy demand for trains during peak hours, combined with traffic bottlenecks on NH 66 and inadequate bus services, has made the situation worse. Season-ticket holders are also seeking more MEMU trains in other corridors due to overcrowding issues. The completion of the MEMU shed expansion in Kollam is crucial to address these issues. Railway sources are working to resolve disputes and complete the necessary work to accommodate 16-coach MEMU rakes. MEMU trains offer advantages such as faster acceleration, wider entry/exit points, and toilets, making them a preferred option for commuters.
