Cong., CPI(M) lock horns over naming community hall in Puthuppally after EMS

More than a year after the death of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, there is a heated dispute in Puthuppally panchayat in Kottayam between the Congress and the CPI(M) over naming a new community hall. The LDF-governed council wants to name it after E.M.S. Namboodiripad, Kerala’s first Communist Chief Minister, but the Congress wants it named after Chandy, who represented the area for over 50 years. The Congress staged a protest against the decision, but the council remains firm. The CPI(M) has offered to name another building after Chandy, but tensions still run high in the Congress stronghold now controlled by the Left.
