Coastal States must register all fishing vessels, says Union Minister

George Kurian, the Minister of State for Fisheries, stressed the importance of uniform registration for fishing vessels in India. He highlighted the responsibility of coastal states to monitor unlicensed fishing vessels operating in their waters. Kurian acknowledged the lack of expertise in some states for proper inspection. He spoke at a workshop on fishing vessel registration, survey, and certification, organized by the Department of Fisheries. Kurian emphasized the need for regulations to improve the livelihood of the fishing community and maximize marine fisheries resources. He also launched the Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training website. The workshop featured presentations from experts in the field, aiming to educate stakeholders on proper registration and certification processes.
