The Kerala High Court has ruled that it is allowed to use safety glass or safety glazing on motor vehicle windscreens or windows as long as they meet the prescribed standards. The court also stated that the state government cannot penalize vehicle owners for using these materials. This decision came in response to petitions challenging fines imposed on vehicle owners for not meeting visual light transmission standards. The bench clarified that safety glazing is permitted under recent amendments to motor vehicle rules, as long as it meets Indian Standards and VLT percentages. The court also rejected the state’s argument that only those who add glazing materials onto safety glass should be penalized, stating that it is difficult to determine who applied the material.
