An Australian IT professional was arrested at the airport in Thiruvananthapuram for carrying an iridium satellite phone without permission from the central government. The device was found during a security check, leading to his arrest by the Valiyathura police. He was charged under various sections of the Indian Telegraph and Wireless Telegraphy Acts. However, he was granted conditional bail and is not allowed to leave the country until the investigation is complete. The satellite phone was seized by the police. The man had come to India to meet his wife, who is a nurse in Thiruvananthapuram, and used the device to communicate with colleagues in rural areas of Australia where the network coverage is poor.
