Members of the National Highway Protection Council staged a protest at Valara near Neriamangalam in Idukki by felling trees along the roadside that posed a threat to the public. They demanded the removal of all such trees along the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway. Despite a High Court directive to remove threatening trees, the forest officials submitted a fake report claiming they had already done so. The Forest department has registered a case against the protestors for illegal tree felling. The issue arose after a fatal incident where a tree fell on a car and a bus on the same highway.
