313 passengers, four employees died in 40 train accidents in 2023-24, says RTI reply



A tragic train accident in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh resulted in the deaths of 719 passengers and 29 employees over the past 10 years. The Ministry of Railways reported that in the 2023-24 financial year, 313 passengers and four employees lost their lives in 40 accidents, the highest number in recent years. Additionally, 744 passengers and five employees sustained injuries during this period. The increase in accidents highlights the need to fill vacancies in the Railways, with 3,223 vacancies among gazetted cadre alone. This information was revealed in response to an RTI query by activist Raju Vazhakkala.
