On September 12, 1948, a coded message from the Indian Army HQ in Delhi changed the fate of the Nizam and Hyderabad forever. Within 16 hours, the Indian army had entered Hyderabad, and after a five-day battle, the Indian tricolour was raised over the city. The Nizam, once the richest man on earth, lost his kingdom nearly 15 months after declaring Hyderabad an independent state. This is the story of Operation Polo, a historic event that altered India’s history and geography.
