US military conducts airstrikes against Islamic State operatives in Somalia

The U.S. military conducted airstrikes in Somalia against Islamic State operatives, the first under President Trump’s second term. The Pentagon stated that multiple operatives were killed, with no harm to civilians. Trump claimed the strikes targeted a senior IS planner and recruits. Somalia’s president’s office praised the operation, emphasizing the strong security partnership between the two countries in combating extremism. The IS affiliate in Somalia, a breakaway faction from al-Shabab, is most active in Puntland and has been involved in attacks in southern and central Somalia. Despite facing pressure, the group continues to operate and seek to expand its influence through recruitment and propaganda.
