The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti and Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra have criticized the celebration of the Union Territory Foundation Day as a “black day” for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. They believe it marks disenfranchisement rather than development. Mufti emphasized that the imposition of Union Territory status on Jammu and Kashmir was unjust and stripped away its autonomy and special status. The valley-based mainstream political parties boycotted the event, with leaders expressing their opposition to the celebration. Karra stated that expecting people to celebrate the event is asking for too much and that the Congress will not participate in any event that celebrates the undermining of the Constitutional set-up.
