The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has told the state highways department to stop road expansion projects in the Nilgiris until they get environmental clearance. The Confederation of Environment Associations of Nilgiris complained that widening roads without proper assessments caused landslips. They want guidelines followed, like maintaining road widths, avoiding tree uprooting, and proper drainage. The National Green Tribunal got involved, ordering investigations and reports. The TNPCB said new road projects in hilly areas need environmental clearance above 1,000 meters. The highways department needs to provide project details. Until then, no work should continue. The case will be heard on October 23.
