The Tamil Nadu government has designated Oct 7 as Nilgiri Tahr Day in honor of conservationist E R C Davidar. However, the contributions of A J T Johnsingh, who assisted Davidar in studying the Nilgiri tahr, have been overlooked. In memory of Johnsingh, the government will establish the Dr A J T Johnsingh Wildlife Conservation Award on Oct 12. Johnsingh conducted important research on the tahr population in the Western Ghats and proposed a plan to repopulate certain areas with tahrs. His work and vision are being remembered and implemented to ensure the conservation of this endangered species.
