Mercedes-Benz is against tax relaxation for petrol-battery cars, stating it could slow down the adoption of electric vehicles. They believe electric vehicles should have lower tax rates to maintain affordability and increase adoption. Currently, electric vehicles are taxed at 5%, while larger hybrids are taxed at 43% and petrol cars at 48%. Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Mercedes are against lowering taxes on hybrids, stating it would be regressive and slow down the pace of EV adoption. Punjab has increased VAT on petrol and diesel, while G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant supports maintaining a significant duty differential between electric and hybrid vehicles to promote zero-emission technologies.
