CPM leader MY Tarigami won for the fifth time from the Kulgam seat in Jammu, defeating his rival by over 7,800 votes. He campaigned for full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and focused on national issues like unemployment and problems faced by apple farmers. Tarigami faced political struggles throughout his life, becoming a Communist under the influence of senior leaders. Despite facing countless tortures and challenges, he remained a popular leader and fought for the rights of farmers and the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His victory was certain, with support from the National Conference and Congress.
