Tamil Nadu to Boost Medical Education with 550 New MBBS Seats Across 11 Colleges | Chennai News

The state health department in Chennai has requested approval from the National Medical Commission to increase 50 undergraduate seats in each of the 11 medical colleges established in 2021. This move would add 550 MBBS seats to Tamil Nadu’s 36 government medical colleges, bringing the total to 5,600 for admissions in 2025-26. The goal is to allow more students to study medicine at a lower cost. Tamil Nadu already has a significant number of medical colleges, with a policy to establish a new one in every district. The health department is currently identifying land for new colleges, which means admissions may not begin until 2025. Additionally, the state has applied for permission to start 70 postgraduate medical seats in 13 medical colleges, covering various specialties with a focus on anaesthesia and gynaecology.
