Chief Minister M K Stalin of Chennai has requested Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to secure the release of 140 fishermen from Tamil Nadu along with 200 fishing boats held by Sri Lankan authorities. He highlighted the recurring issue of Indian fishermen being apprehended by Sri Lanka and emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts to address the situation. The arrests pose a serious threat to the livelihood and safety of the fishermen and their families in Tamil Nadu. Stalin specifically mentioned the recent arrest of 12 fishermen from Nagapattinam, bringing the total number of arrests in 2024 to 30. He urged Jaishankar to intervene immediately and prioritize resolving the issue.
