The Union environment minister emphasized that India should not be solely judged as a top emitter of greenhouse gases, but rather by its low per capita emission and the fact that it accounts for a large portion of the world’s population. He highlighted the importance of considering the principle of ‘common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities’ in climate change negotiations, as developed countries have historically contributed more to emissions. The minister discussed India’s efforts towards achieving a Net Zero Economy by 2070, including strengthening renewable grids, promoting low-carbon growth technologies, and making the transport and urban sectors more sustainable. He also emphasized the need for climate finance, carbon markets, and technology transfer to develop renewable energy markets.
