The Supreme Court deferred the decision on Aligarh Muslim University’s minority status and referred it to a new bench. The court overturned a previous judgement stating that AMU couldn’t be a minority institution since it was established through central legislation. The bench outlined criteria to assess the minority status, overruling the previous ruling. The case will be further addressed by a regular bench to determine AMU’s minority status and address appeals against a 2006 ruling. This issue has been ongoing for decades, with the Supreme Court previously referring it to a seven-judge bench in 2019.
