Due to heavy rain earlier in the week, the Koyambedu fruit and vegetable market in Chennai was left flooded with stagnant water, rotting produce, and waste material. The reduced demand for fruits and vegetables led to a sharp drop in prices, with tomatoes being sold at half the price within just a day. Despite efforts to drain the water and clear the slush, the market remained in poor condition, deterring customers. The president of the fruit market noted a significant drop in sales, with only a fraction of the usual amount of fruits being sold due to the rain alerts and deteriorating market conditions.
