Recently, there has been a notable increase in the demand for platelets in Jagtial and Karimnagar districts, leading patients to seek donors in Hyderabad. This surge in requests, which is typically fulfilled within the districts, suggests a rise in dengue or other viral diseases in these areas. The Hyderabad blood donors’ network has been receiving 3-4 requests per day from each district, compared to the usual 1-2 requests per month in previous years. Despite this, official figures from the state health department do not show a significant increase in dengue cases, leaving authorities puzzled. Some believe that this increased demand may be driven by unnecessary platelet transfusions recommended by corporate hospitals, leading to expensive treatments for patients.
