Need ‘common civil law’ that ends discrimination based on religion: Venkaiah

Former Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu, believes that it is time for a “Common Civil Code” that would establish common laws for marriage, divorce, and inheritance in order to protect women’s rights. He emphasizes finding common ground across personal laws rather than uniformity. Naidu highlights the importance of discussions involving representatives from various communities and religions to avoid discrimination. He also suggests that dogma should not interfere with common laws. Naidu’s proposal for a secular civil code is different from the Uniform Civil Code previously discussed. The BJP has been advocating for a UCC, with some states already implementing it. The issue was also discussed by the Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice in 2023.
