The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is considering allowing the existing agency to biomine an additional 15 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste at the Okhla landfill by next month. Despite a four-month delay, the agency has almost reached its initial target of 30 lakh metric tonnes. If they achieve this target within the set timeline, they will be given the additional task of biomining more waste. The civic body claims they have the necessary approvals already and just need a nod from the commissioner. Bhalswa has completed biomining of 45 lakh tonnes, while Ghazipur has processed 12 lakh metric tonnes with no plans for additional work. In total, 146.9 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste has been processed out of 280 lakh assessed in 2019.
