KK Nagar: Chennai’s KK Nagar and Jafferkhanpet at Risk of Severe Flooding Due to Canal Neglect |

The Greater Chennai Corporation has halted the restoration of the MGR canal, leading to potential floods in low-lying areas of KK Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Jafferkhanpet, and MGR Nagar. The Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust has not released funds for the project, which aimed to improve floodwater drainage by deepening the canal and building a retaining wall. Encroachments and illegal sewage discharge are further obstructing the canal, reducing its carrying capacity. Despite a court order to remove encroachments, GCC has only cleared a fraction of them. With funding issues causing delays, it is uncertain when the restoration work will resume.
