India to build own foundational models, to take on ChatGPT, Deepseek

India is making bold moves in the field of AI, announcing plans to build its own ‘foundational model’ to compete with global AI giants. The government has set up a common compute facility with 18,693 GPUs to be used by startups and researchers, offering it at a fraction of global cost benchmarks. The focus is on developing models aligned with Indian context and culture, with biases removed. The government has also approved projects under the India AI Mission, focusing on areas like healthcare, education, agriculture, and climate change. AI safety is also a priority, with collaborative institutions working on tools and frameworks for safe and trusted AI. India is confident in its AI ambitions and believes that its trusted reputation will help it flourish in the global AI landscape.
