Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim was denied clearance by the Union ministry of external affairs to attend the Brics summit in Moscow, citing “political reasons”. He was the only Indian mayor scheduled to participate in the event, which will be attended by global figures including PM Narendra Modi. Public representatives need clearance from the Centre for foreign trips when invited by international organizations or foreign governments. Hakim had initially received approval from CM Mamata Banerjee and the Union home ministry’s “foreign branch” before the denial from the ministry of external affairs.
