Disagreements continue in parliamentary panel on Waqf

Opposition leaders walked out of a meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in New Delhi due to disagreements over the deposition of the Delhi Waqf Board administrator. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi objected to the administrator’s presentation, stating it was not vetted by the Delhi government. The panel Chairperson sought the Lok Sabha Secretary-General’s opinion before allowing the presentation to continue. Three members protested during the presentation, leading to the agreement to hear from the Delhi Minority Affairs Minister. The administrator, who supported the Bill, faced sharp questions from the opposition members. He praised the provision for separate boards for the Agakhani and Bohra communities as “forward-looking.” Opposition leader Asaduddin Owaisi questioned if the Delhi Waqf Board has clear estimates of the number of followers from these denominations.
