Delhi government moots Rs 7.5L aid for kin of inmates who die in custody | Delhi News

The Delhi government has proposed a compensation of Rs 7.5 lakh for families of prisoners who die of unnatural causes while in custody in the city’s jails. This initiative aims to address grievances and uphold human rights within the prison system. The compensation will not apply in cases of death by suicide, escape attempts, natural causes, or disasters. The policy also includes provisions for recovering the compensation amount from the salaries of prison staff found responsible for custodial deaths. A committee will investigate such incidents, and a detailed report will be submitted to the National Human Rights Commission for transparency. The overcrowded prison complexes in Delhi house almost double the number of prisoners they were designed for.
