Dalits enter, pray at temple near Chennai after 12 years | Chennai News

Caste discrimination is a major issue in the village of Vazhuthalambedu in Gummidipoondi, where the dominant vanniyar community has been preventing scheduled castes from praying at the Bidari Ettiyamman Temple. However, officials intervened and ensured that scheduled castes could access the temple. Tension still remains as some vanniyars object to scheduled castes using the streets in front of their houses. Talks are ongoing to resolve the issue, with the district administration planning to lay a road to the temple for public use. The HR&CE department has taken over the administration of the temple, which has a history of being locked and sealed due to caste-related conflicts. Despite efforts to reach a compromise, discrimination and conflict persist in the village.
