Alt Carbon, a company based in Darjeeling, is using crushed basalt from mines to help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The process, known as rock weathering, involves spreading the basalt dust on tea estates to enrich the soil and capture carbon. This innovative approach has attracted investments from carbon-credit companies, with the potential to sequester large amounts of carbon in a short period of time. While there are still questions about the accuracy of measuring carbon sequestration, Alt Carbon is committed to further research and hopes to sequester 50,000 tonnes of carbon in the coming years.
