Chennai doctors perform rare Bombay O blood group kidney transplant | Chennai News



Matching blood groups is crucial in transplant surgery to prevent rejection of the organ. Dr. Rajan Ravichandran and his team successfully performed a kidney transplant for a patient with the rare Bombay O blood group. The patient’s mother, who had a different blood group, was the donor. The team had to use their experience and knowledge to ensure a successful cross-blood match. Without the right blood group match or removal of antibodies, the transplanted organ could be rejected. Due to the rarity of the Bombay O blood group, there were no existing guidelines for monitoring anti-H antibodies, but the team was able to successfully complete the procedure.
