Canada reduces immigration to witness population decline in 2025, 2026

The Canadian government has announced a plan to pause population growth in the short term, which will result in a decline in population in 2025 and 2026. This plan includes reduced targets for immigration streams and controlled targets for temporary residents like international students and foreign workers. The population of Canada has been increasing steadily since 1867, mainly due to immigration. The population reached 41 million in April 2024, with almost 98% of the growth attributed to immigration in 2023. The government expects a marginal decline in population in 2025 and 2026, followed by growth in 2027.
