Canada has decided to end the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa programme, impacting international students, including those from India. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a reduction in international student permits, citing the need to crack down on abuse of the system. This decision comes amid a diplomatic dispute between India and Canada, as India is the largest source of foreign students in Canada. The SDS programme, launched in 2018 to expedite processing for eligible students, has now been terminated. Prospective students can still apply through the regular study permit stream. Additionally, Canada has scaled back its immigration policy for low-skilled workers and plans to admit fewer permanent and temporary residents in the coming years.
