The BEST fleet in Mumbai has decreased by 9% as 280 minibuses were taken off the roads, reducing the total number of buses to 2,915. This has caused inconvenience to many commuters, especially in the western suburbs. Activists and former BEST panel members have raised concerns about the practice of wet leasing buses, which allows contractors to withdraw fleets at any time. BEST is now facing a bus shortage, with ordinary single-decker buses replacing the minibuses, leading to longer waits at bus stops. The general manager has promised to address the issue and resume minibus services to avoid further inconvenience to commuters. Additionally, around 1,200 driving and maintenance staff are currently without work due to the reduction in minibuses.
