A scramble for rice when monsoon failed and rationing policy was introduced in early 1950s

In the 1952 Assembly election in Tamil Nadu, the issue of rice shortage played a significant role in the defeat of the Congress government. The implementation of rationing was criticized for being left to corrupt officials, with big farmers benefiting unfairly. The new government, led by Rajaji, ended rationing in June 1952, allowing rice and wheat prices to be determined by the free market.
