Five individuals involved in the “Letter of Credit” scam in Assam during the 90s have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from 18 months to three years. They were also fined Rs 1.6 lakh for their fraudulent activities. The scam involved fraudulent withdrawal of government funds by preparing fictitious bills. The accused abused their official positions to draw excess money from the treasury. The CBI conducted the investigation and filed a chargesheet in 1994. After completion of the trial, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced them accordingly. Some accused, including Dr T Buragohain, died during the trial. The CBI took over the case from the Assam police in 1994.
