The Air Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department in Mumbai rescued four endangered hornbill birds from passengers who tried to smuggle them into the country. The birds were found hidden in luggage upon the passengers’ arrival from Thailand. The passengers, a man and a woman, were arrested in connection with the incident. The hornbill birds, belonging to the Visayan and Sulawesi species, were alive and were rescued, hydrated, and given food. They were then sent back to Bangkok as they are not native to India. Wildlife experts from RAWW were consulted during the process.
