The Greater Chennai Corporation recently conducted a survey and found that there are 1.8 lakh stray dogs in the city, a significant increase from the 2018 census. The survey also revealed that only 27% of the dogs are neutered, leading to a higher risk of population growth. Certain zones in Chennai have a higher concentration of stray dogs, with Ambattur having the highest number. Neutering rates vary across different zones, with central and south Chennai having higher rates compared to north Chennai. The survey emphasized the importance of increasing neutering rates to control the population and reduce public complaints about stray dogs. Plans are in place to establish more ABC centres to address the issue.
