The Kolkata Metro has replaced the steel third rail with an aluminium one at the Girish Park siding under the Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor. This switch aims to reduce energy losses by 84%, saving Rs 1 crore per year per kilometer. The new aluminium third rail has better electrical conductivity, which will lead to faster acceleration of the metro trains. The Metro Railway has set a two-year target to complete the installation of aluminium third rails across the entire network. Once completed, Kolkata’s Metro Railway will be on par with similar services worldwide.
