Kolkata: Eastern Railway Celebrates Sealdah Station’s 162-Year-Old Journey

Eastern Railway recently celebrated the 162-year legacy of Sealdah Station with grand festivities. The station’s history dates back to September 29, 1862, when train service began between Sealdah and Ranaghat. The celebrations included a decorated Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train and performances by schoolchildren. The Sealdah-Ranaghat line, one of the first transit connections in Bengal, has since become a vital lifeline for commuters. Special services were run on the historic route, which once connected Siliguri to Dhaka during the colonial era. The commemorative event is part of the Swachh Bharat cultural festival, featuring a photo exhibition at Sealdah and Ranaghat stations. The Sealdah-Ranaghat line is now a bustling suburban area, handling mail and express trains at high speeds.
