I used to believe that the Election Commission of India was fair and impartial in conducting elections, but recent events have made me question that. When I tried to reach the Chief Election Commissioner to discuss the impact of a religious festival on upcoming by-polls in Bihar, I was met with dismissiveness and arrogance. Despite petitions and requests for a postponement, the EC refused to consider the impact of the festival. However, when similar requests were made for elections in other states, the EC deferred the dates citing social and cultural engagements. This double standard raises concerns about the EC’s independence and fairness. The perception that the EC is influenced by political pressures is growing, and it is disappointing to see such lack of integrity in an institution that is vital for democracy.
