The Highways Department is working on estimating the cost of constructing a new bridge across the Palar River at Sevilimedu on the Kancheepuram-Vandavasi SH 116. The 900-metre-long bridge will be adjacent to the existing one and will cost around ₹100 crore to build, taking 18 months to complete. The new bridge will have two lanes like the existing one, allowing for smoother traffic flow. Local residents have long demanded a wider bridge or a new one due to traffic congestion caused by heavy vehicles. The project also includes restoring an existing causeway across the river. Kancheepuram MLA C.V.M.P. Ezhilarasan has raised the issue in the State Assembly, and the Highways Minister has committed to the construction of the new bridge.
