Tamil Nadu sees surge in extreme weather events in 2024: report



Tamil Nadu has been hit hard by extreme weather events in 2024, with a significant increase in the number of extreme weather days compared to the previous year. The Climate India 2024 report highlights the impact of rising temperatures, heavy rainfall, and cyclonic storms on agriculture, infrastructure, and local communities. The State has recorded 67 extreme weather event days, resulting in human fatalities, livestock deaths, and damage to houses. The report also points out that neighbouring states like Kerala and Karnataka have experienced more frequent and intense weather disruptions. Agriculture has been severely affected, with crop damage and losses reported due to irregular rainfall, heatwaves, and storm surges. The worrying trend of daily extreme weather events continues, making 2024 the most extreme year in terms of weather events over the last three years.
