Hackers were able to exploit a vulnerability in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSS) website, ‘hyderabadwater.gov.in,’ which is used by residents to pay their water bills online. They managed to spam Google News with links promoting gambling, redirecting users to an online betting platform. This type of attack, known as a Structured Query Language Injection (SQLi) attack, reveals vulnerabilities in the website’s database system. Hackers can use SQLi to delete or modify information in the database, extract sensitive data, or compromise the website further. This incident highlights the importance of properly validating and sanitizing user input to prevent such attacks.
