FIR against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya for spreading ‘fake news’

Tejasvi Surya, a Member of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party, has been booked by Haveri district police for spreading fake news. He claimed that a farmer in Haveri committed suicide after his land was taken over by Waqf, blaming the state government for appeasing minorities. However, the police clarified that the farmer actually took his own life due to financial distress. Surya, along with editors of two Kannada news portals, has been charged under section 353(2) of the law for circulating false information with intent to create enmity. Surya has since deleted the post from his social media.
