The State government in Kerala is facing various challenges in executing the 530-km SilverLine semi-high-speed rail corridor project, with the Railways seeking a revised DPR for the project. The hurdles include the need for additional land for broad-gauge tracks, cost escalation, and funding concerns. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has mentioned that environmental and technical issues need to be addressed for the project to proceed. The K-Rail SilverLine Virudha Janakeeya Samiti has raised environmental and cost concerns, planning a protest meeting. However, sources in K-Rail have stated that similar infrastructure projects are underway in Kerala, and there is little cause for concern about the SilverLine project.
