The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new toll collection system for a 28-km urban expressway, marking a major shift in India’s tolling system. The selected bank will manage toll collection using a multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system, eliminating the need for physical toll booths. Sensors and equipment mounted on overhead gantries will automatically deduct toll fees as vehicles pass by. This system is expected to reduce congestion and pollution, with greater transparency and efficiency. NHAI aims to expand this high-tech toll collection to more expressways in the future.
